Excretory System
The function of the Excretory system is to remove waste from the human body. The excretory system maintains homeostasis by keeping the body's internal environment stable and free of harmful levels of chemicals by removing metabolic waste from the body. This system consists of specialized structures and capillary networks that assist in the excretory process. The human excretory system includes the kidneys and their functional unit, the nephron. The excretory activity of the kidneys is modulated by specialized hormones that regulate the amount of absorption within the nephron.
One of the most important ways that the body maintains homeostasis is by keeping the right amount of water and salts inside the body. Too much water in the body, causes cells to swell and burst. Too little water in the body, causes cells to shrivel. The organs of the excretory system help to keep the correct balance of water and salts within the body. The human kidneys are the major organs of bodily excretion and they are the most important organs in maintaining homeostatic functions such as maintaining the volume of body fluids, the balance of salt ions in body fluids and the excretion of harmful nitrogen-containing molecules, such as urea, ammonia, and uric acid (10).

The Important StructuresKidney: Maintains extracellular fluids, eliminates wastes resulting from normal metabolism and their metabolites.
Bladder: Enables urine to enter, be stored, and later be released for evacuation of the body Urethra:Small tubes that excrete the urine from the bladder to outside the body with the help of genitals Ureters: Carries urine form each kidney to the urinary bladder (11). |
